Studies on the age groups of social networks are evaluated by the market researchers of eMarketer. The basis are studies of nuvoodoo and globalwebindex. The studies related to users in the US as well include the reach of the particular social networks.
As might be expected, especially the younger population groups and teenagers are showing the highest activity. However, already the two youngest groups have other preferences. Frequented disproportionately highly by teenagers (14-17 years) are Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, Tumblr, YouTube and Vine. Disproportionately highly frequented by the age group of 18-34 year olds are Facebook, Google+, reddit, Twitter and Whatsapp. Older age groups are expected to be particularly strong especially in the business oriented networks such as LinkedIn, but surprisingly at Flickr as well.
An anomaly is observed for Facebook, which seems to have a generational problem like it has been reported already often. Beside the networks of commercial use and the exception of Flickr at Facebook the oldest group of 35-54 years old is more strongly represented than the group of teens.
